museumssterne*** - basel museums open for the disabled
Should disabled individuals take part and engage in cultural life? Of course. To encourage and facilitate such participation and engagement in the museums of Basel, the program of museumssterne*** - or museum stars - was created.
Museums that open up their facilities to people with special needs through innovative offers and measures submit their projects to the museumssterne*** organization. A jury made up of affected individuals and experts from the museum, construction and marketing fields convenes each year to recognize especially impressive projects with a museumsstern*** along with prize money.
The museumssterne*** program was launched by Basel Museum Services and the Office for Integration and Equality of People with Disabilities (both housed within the Department of Presidential Affairs of the Canton of Basel-Stadt) and is the first of its kind in Switzerland. The project is planned to run for five years through the year 2010.
